Readability v/s Legibility

Well I learned that readability and legibility at not the same. Readability is how easy it is to read a lot of text, pages and pages of text. In this type of page a clean serif face is the best to read. I had to look that one up just so I could understand what exactly that was.  So I will share just in case you were unsure as well. Serif is a small line trailing from the edges of the letters and symbols as you can see in this Y. The san-serif one the other hand does not have the extra lines, which is good for title texts or banners. When this type is used it is more legible because the letterforms fit into the pixels better and make cleaner characters. When the serifs are used on a lower resolution digital display the fine lines sometimes disappear or appear too large.

For readability, make sure type is not too big or to large between 8 and 18 font. Try not to use all caps or too much bold text. Try to avoid long lines of text across the page you will lose the readers eye. Try short lines of text but not too short. In addition, make sure to use enough contrast.  Here comes those CRAP rules again.

For legibility, don’t use all caps and remember to use the sans serif typeface. You can break some of the rules just remember to be conscious of how it reads, is it readable and legible?  Just don’t go to the extreme where you are going to irritate the reader and they lose interest.  Look at other pages and see what looks good and what you feel is frustrating to look at.

Classmates polling questions

I really enjoyed doing the different polls.  I did not have any issues with any of them except my own when I was trying to set it up. I was wondering if the questions that were chose by everyone had to do with something that was going on in their lives or if it was just random. The food questions made me hungry like Daiahs Oreo to go with Kims coffee and Dyans favorite food. I just got back from St Thomas so Pennys question was a given.  They were all interesting and think they had a little story about the person behind each one.  Thank you everyone for sharing.

My Niagara Falls Photoshop

My digital picture of Niagara Falls

My Picture of Niagara Falls is 8 megapixels and I want to download it onto my computer so I can add it to a web page, USA landmarks. The picture is too big to put on the web page so I will save the picture as a native file so if I need to edit it again, I can and I also need to save it as a web file.  To resize the picture I will open image, then image size, then resize. I will change the resolution to 72dpi or 96dpi and medium compression for my web picture. I will then make sure constrain proportions is checked. I will then grab the crop tool on the quick selections and cut out the unwanted tourist out of my picture. After this is all done, my picture is ready for the web page.

Web v/s Designing for print

What I got out of this part of our reading is that it is a lot more cost effective to use the web then it is to design for print. You have more options for color and imagination. Print is important because you can move around with it and take it places instead of carrying around a laptop but that is even changing with Nooks and Kindle fires. you can fit so much information on to a website for lower cost then trying to print out a 12 page brochure. You can also get your work to a larger audience. the web goes to the remote corners of the earth were your brochure may sit in a doctors office for the next year or two. Designing for print will have its advantages if cost is not an issue and the print tools are more advanced. but with the web you can add sound and animation as well as links to other important sites. the web I believe has a big advantage over print

Graphic Design

Graphic design is a lot more complicated then I was ever aware of.  I have downloaded pictures onto PowerPoint and to face book but never really thought about the process. It was interesting to find out that there are two different types of graphics, one that is pixel-based and one that is math based.
Most of the graphics on the web are pixel which is bitmapped.
the difference between color being used in printing verses web design was pretty interesting. on the web you have so many different color options available to you through the web.
We use a lot of graphics in everyday life like my explanation of using pictures in the power points I use at work and at school. I use them in Facebook and we can use them on the blogs we just built.
I would say they are defiantly a part of our everyday lives.

Quiz 112

For question 1. I would most likely use print because it is only once a year and it is a private document. There may be graphs included in the report but it would not call for a lot of graphics that would make the cost of printing high.
Question 2 I would use print because you want it to be right in front of the agencies, They will open their mail to see what is inside but they may not take the time to go to a computer and open a web page.
Question 3 For this one I would use the web, it is more cost efficient because the software has updates every few months. the web page can send out notifications whenever there is an update and the small company is not putting out all the cost to revamp a flyer.
Question 4 this one would be web also because of the constant updates it would be more cost efficient and immediately available to your customer.
Question 5 This would be a great one for the web. you can reach a wide audience all over the world at just a click. a small booklet would only take a up a web pages were printing many booklets would be a major cost. on the web you only have to make one site excisable to a large audience.
Question 6 This one would probably be better in print. because of the graphics on a web page are not as grand as print a lot of the artistic talent would be lost.

If you can not tell, I have never blogged before

I am a little challenged on how to get my writing transferred without them going haywire. I apologize if you are trying to read what I wrote and it is all over the place. I was finally able to look over everyone's pages and they are all very creative. Nicky I love how yours is a peaceful welcoming font and your family all on the side.  I have not figured out how to do any of those things yet or had much time. I am doing two classes this term trying to get them in for graduation and it is a bit overwhelming with trying to work and care for my family. But I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.  I hope everyone is having a good week and I will see you tomorrow.
What I learned from the videos, Exploring Web Design.

Clear concise content, is important when designing a web page. Architecture and design is important for organization. You should generate mockups and test  the web pages with a target audience.
I found it interesting that different browsers will alter how the page is seen.
Web terminology

How the web work was extremely over whelming.

Made of many parts http is the protocal.www.lynda.com is the resource name. the path/port
www is a subdomain a folder Lynda is the domain servers.

Default page is usually the home page
Absolute and relative urls outside the domain or with in the same domain

Dns is the phonebook of the web because the IP address is numbers which is great for a computer not so much a human.

HTTP Transfers data on the web

FTP,SMTP, RTP common web protocols

Pop post office protocol

HTML- tags first used in the early 1990’s

2.0 1995, 4.0 to the rescue

XHTML 1.0 was released in hopes to get rid of HTML but Ended in 2009

RSS real simple syndication. Can update automatically. Link to articles. Java script is needed. Tricky for a novice web builder

Jpg, gif, and png- web graphic formats.

JPEG Joint Photographic experts group compressed with lossy to reduce the file size Graphic interchanges format used for logos or icons

Png-Portable network graphics support millions of colors. Larger files. Older browsers do not support.
Some of the items they went over where very interesting and I had no clue what the terms meant though I would use them almost every day. Some of it was over whelming.

First Post

My first class I learned how to make and post a blog. This class has a few familiar faces. I am looking forward to learning more about the web and how to manipulate a web page.
